I was invited to join Mark Maistrovich and Anthony Cox, who had been playing with drummer and bandleader Milo Fine, to form a brand new band, along with the mighty drummer, Phil Hey. I knew Mark from watching his playing with The Infinity Art Unit, and Anthony had been in my college music theory class (I had jammed with his Ornette Coleman-inspired group, Sambaku). We became one of the heaviest improvisational units in the Twin Cities, with an ECM (record label) kind of sound. We played at Steve Kimmel’s Rainbow Gallery for several gigs, and staged our own concerts wherever we could. It was extremely exciting playing with masters like these.
